Mildred Lyon Hetherington

(1892-1984)

Mildred Hetherington was born in Michigan in 1892. She moved to Chicago as a teenager and married architect Murray Hetherington. During the depression she worked as an artist, doing book illustrations and portrait commissions. In 1933 Hetherington was employed by the Chicago World’s Fair, and her ability to capture images quickly made her succeed as one of the top earning artists at the fair. During World War II she did over 1500 portraits of servicemen. She also served as the Director of the Vanderpoel Art Association. Hetherington died in Chicago in 1984.
