John Newton Howitt
(1885-1958)
John Newton Howitt was an illustrator, painter, lecturer, and teacher. He was born in White Plains, NY in 1885. He also lived and worked in New York City. As an illustrator, he designed the covers of national magazines and advertising posters. He won the Cropsey Award in 1950, and was president of the Hudson Valley Art Association in 1952. He studied at the Art Students League with F.V. DuMond and W.A. Clark, as well as with H. Reuterdahl. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club in New York, and the Westchester Arts & Crafts Guild (where he was also president). His works were exhibited at the Society of Independent Artists, 1917 – 1919; the Corcoran Gallery, 1921; and the Westchester Arts & Crafts Guild, 1945 (winning a prize). He is listed in “Who Was Who in American Art”. He died in Port Jervis, NY in 1958.
