Bertha de Hellebranth

Bertha de Hellebranth was born in Budapest in 1903. She emigrated to America with her sister, Elena in the 1930s. The sisters lived together, both working as artists, in New Jersey. They found recognition early on, with a 1932 TIME magazine article hailing them “the only sister act in modern art”. They were known to paint the same subject simultaneously, and a client who commissioned a de Hellebranth portrait would have the option of choosing the preferred piece. Bertha de Hellebranth was a member of the American Artist’s Professional League, the American Watercolor Society, and the Audubon Society Artists. Her work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Philadelphia Fine Art Academy, and the National Academy of Design. Nearly 200 pieces of the de Hellebranth sisters’ art works were given to the American Hungarian Foundation’s Museum Collection in 2002.
