Henry Gasser
(1909-1981)
Henry Gasser was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1909. He was a painter, writer, designer, and teacher and studied at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, Grand Central School of Art, and the Art Students League with Robert Brackman and John R. Grabach. He was a member of the National Academy of Design from 1960 to 1967, Rockport Art Association, Audubon Artists in Philadelphia, and the American Watercolor Society (for which he also served as vice-president in 1953). His works have been exhibited at the Montclair Art Museum, the Smithsonian Institute, the Guatemala National Fair, the Albany Institute of History and Art, Allied Artists of America, and Audubon Artists. He received many prizes for his works from numerous organizations including the New Orleans Art Association in 1944 and 1945, the Springfield Museum of Art in 1943, and he was awarded the Steiger Award in 1945. He was the director of the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art from 1946 - 1955, and contributed to American Artist magazine. He wrote the book Oil Painting Methods in 1953, and is listed in Artists of the Rockport Art Association (1956). His works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Art, and the Newark (NJ) Museum. He died in South Orange, New Jersey in 1981.
