George Gibson  

(1904-2001)

George Gibson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1904. He was a realist painter and illustrator of the realist style. He studied at The Chouinard Art School, and was taught by F. Tolles Chamberlin. He was a member of the American Watercolor Society, the California Watercolor Society, the National Academy of Design, and the National Watercolor Society. His work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the California Watercolor Society, the American Watercolor Society, and the National Watercolor Society. In 1934, he began a thirty-five year career with Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios and became director of the scene department. He developed colossal, dramatic backdrops for movies such as “Brigadoon”, “The Wizard of Oz”, and “Oklahoma”. He died in 2001.
