Edgar Hewitt Nye
(1879-1943)
Edgar Hewitt Nye was a painter and teacher who was born in 1879 in Richmond, VA and lived most of his life in Washington, DC, except for the years he spent in France and England between 1901 and 1914. He studied at the Corcoran School and with J.N. Barlow of England. He was a member of the Society of Washington Artists; the Washington Watercolor Club; and the Washington Landscape Club. His works have been included in exhibitions of the Society of Washington Artists; the Corcoran Gallery Biennials, 1914 – 26 (4 times); the Corcoran Gallery (solo, 1922); the Washington Watercolor Club (winning prizes in 1926, 1927, 1933, 1937); the George Washington Independent Exhibition, 1935 (winning the purchase prize); the Society of Independent Artists; and the Washington Landscape Club. His works are included in the collections of the Phillips Memorial Gallery in Washington, DC; the Plymouth Gallery in England; the National Museum of American Art; Georgetown University; Corcoran Gallery of Art; University of Georgia Museum; and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA. Edgar Hewitt Nye is listed in “Who Was Who in American Art”, and “McMahan’s Artists of Washington, DC”. He died in 1943 in Washington, DC.
