  Charles Wheeler Locke  

(1899-1983)

Charles Wheeler Locke was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1899. He was an illustrator, painter, and printmaker well-known for his realist and modern works. He studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, the Art Students League of New York, and also throughout Paris in 1928. He taught at Broadmoor Art Academy and was a member of the National Academy of Design, and the Society of American Etchers. He participated in WPA and the Federal Arts Projects. His works have been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery Biennial, the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He died in Garrison, New York in 1983.
