modernism
Modernism is the style of art that radically broke with the artistic traditions of the past when European artists of the early 20th century began to create art that reflected an industrialized, urban, and politicized world that was characterized by change and experimentation. This art sought to convey the flood of new ideas confronting our culture at the time, including existentialism, Marxism, psychoanalysis, and consumerism, among others. The result was powerful and exciting movements like Dada, Surrealism, Expressionism, and Pop Art, to name a few. This new way of viewing art, the artist, and society profoundly affected art-making in the Western world throughout the century and was instrumental in relocating the center of the art world from Paris to New York after 1945.
