Letterio Calapai (1902-1993)

Letterio Calapai (CAL-a-pie) was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1902. He was a muralist, printmaker, and illustrator well-known for his abstract works. He studied and taught at the Art Students League of New York, Atelier 17, and the New School for Social Research. He was taught by Stanley William Hayter, and was a member of Audubon Artists, National Society of Mural Painters, Salons of America, and worked for the Federal Arts Projects. His artworks have been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy, and Salons of America. He died in Glencoe, Illinois in 1993.
